If you are attacking remember that your objective is to cause your opponent so much pain he will submit - not to injure him. Increase the pressure on the hold steadily so that he has time to submit. Be patient. Your opponent may be able to withstand the pain for a short time but often the prolonged application of a painful hold will force him to submit.

If you are defending be brave not stupid. Withstand the pain your opponent is inflicting for as long as you can - he may decide you are not going to submit and release the hold - but tap before you are injured. Submission is not humiliation.
